Risk Management & Contingency

Sabre Safety offer extensive H2S and Toxic gas risk management and contingency planning services. From independent consultation and surveys to full risk management and contingency plans Sabre Safety have you covered.

H2S Contingency Planning

H2S contingency planning is an integral part of the preparation for any operation where there may be potential of encountering H2S. A typical H2S contingency plan will document key requirements and actions to be followed during an H2S emergency. Sabre Safety has a wealth of experience developing operation specific H2S contingency plans.

Sabre consultants can help with creating H2S contingency plans ‘from scratch’ or can be engaged to conduct an in-depth review of customers’ existing plans with recommendations to ensure the most robust measures are in place to protect personnel and plant in the event of an H2S emergency.

Online H2S Risk Assessment

H2S is the single biggest killer of workers in the oil & gas industry. Have you considered all the risks involved in operating in a known H2S area?

A few simple questions that must be considered:

  • Are you working in a known H2S geographical zone, is there a history of H2S in this area?
  • Is the reservoir location that you are working to located within a known geological formation that may contain H2S?
  • Will your operations increase the risk of H2S being released to atmosphere where the workforce will be present?
  • Do all personnel need to be working/located in the area?
  • Have you taken all the engineering steps to negate the risk of exposing the workforce to H2S or other non-life-supportive atmospheres?
  • Does your evacuation plan consider the possibilities of increasing toxic hazards around your primary evacuation routes?

Engineering Support Capabilities

Sabre Safety offers a comprehensive engineering support capability. The head office in Dundee houses an in-house engineering team who can design, install and commission bespoke systems for gas detection or cascade breathing air systems for operations in H2S environments, or advise on any current standard packages.

Some examples are:

  • Custom made breathing air cascade systems, including Euronav, the world’s largest cascade.
  • Bespoke gas detection, such as the one designed for Wood Group’s first wireless gas detection system in the North Sea.

Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs)

Workplace exposure limits (WELs) vary considerably across regions and territories throughout the globe. With Sabre’s extensive experience, we can assist in defining the standards that apply to you, and provide the appropriate controls and procedures to ensure your workforce remains protected and safe while conforming to local laws and standards.

Sabre began by focusing on the North Sea before growing internationally, as such, the UK standards act as a base line of our procedures. Many substances are used at work but only about 500 have WELs listed in EH40 workplace exposure limits.

Under regulation 7 of the COSHH regulations, it is stated that Control Of Exposure may only be treated as adequate if any WELs for that substance is not exceeded. Employers have a duty to ensure each of their employees is not exposed to any concentration of substance in excess of the WELs for that substance.

The WEL value is expressed as a time weighted average (TWA) and there are two variations, the Long Term Exposure Limit (LTEL) which is the maximum exposure permitted over an 8-hour period and the Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL) which is the maximum exposure permitted over a 15-minute reference period.

Sabre Safety Services provide engineered controls specific to your needs and conforming to your local standards and laws to prevent exposure to H2S, ensuring the safety of site workers and employees.

Face Fit Testing

Face fit testing is a requirement under of both the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 — which requires RPE to be both adequate and suitable for the wearer and also The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 – places responsibility on employers to assess and provide appropriate PPE. Face fit testing can be carried out at both our Purpose built facility or at clients sites as required.
